How much do I need to retire?
It’s one of the biggest questions when thinking about retirement: how much is enough?
The answer is different for everyone.
You might have a pension worth £500,000 and have more than enough for the retirement you want. Someone else could have £1 million and still need to make compromises.
That’s because retirement isn’t really about reaching a particular pension pot. It’s about understanding what you want your retirement to look like and whether your money can support it.
How much income will I need in retirement?
A useful starting point is to think about what you actually want to spend.
The 2026 Retirement Living Standards estimate that a single person might spend around £13,900 for a minimum retirement, £32,700 a year for a moderate retirement or £45,400 for a comfortable retirement. For a two-person household, those figures rise to £22,500, £45,400 and £62,700 respectively.

These can be helpful benchmarks, but they aren't your retirement plan.
Your own number will depend on your lifestyle. Do you want to travel? Eat out regularly? Change the car every few years? Help children or grandchildren? Do you still have a mortgage? Or perhaps your spending will reduce considerably once you stop working?
It's not just about your pension
One of the biggest mistakes is looking at your pension in isolation.
Your retirement could be funded from a combination of:
Pensions
ISAs and investments
Cash savings
State Pension
Property or rental income
Business assets or a future business sale
Other sources of income
The question isn't simply “How big is my pension?”
It's “How can everything I have work together to fund the life I want?”
How do I know if I have enough?
This is where financial planning becomes really valuable.
At Ella Rose Financial, we use lifetime cashflow planning to bring everything together and model your finances into the future.
We can explore questions such as:
What if I retire five years earlier?
What if I spend more while I'm fit and healthy?
What if investment markets fall?
What if I live to 100?
Can I afford to give some money to my family now?
Rather than aiming for an arbitrary pension figure, you can start making decisions based on what your own financial future could actually look like.
And sometimes the answer isn't that you need to save more.
Sometimes, you already have enough.
The important part is knowing.
